From Quote to Completion, You’re in the Loop

Once you’ve contacted us, our first step is to discuss your project’s scope and budget and schedule a time for us to visit the site.
Following our visit, your detailed and accurate quote will arrive within 3-4 days, along with a contract confirming your job’s details and outlining exactly how we’ll proceed.

Construction usually takes 1 ½ – 3 weeks, with more complex jobs taking longer. We will perform all the necessary excavations, lay a sturdy and resilient open-grade base, build your retaining wall, and grade the resulting surfaces to your specifications.

Open-Graded Base Construction for Durability
Most installers use a poured concrete footer as the foundation of their retaining walls. While that may seem like a good idea up front, it’s asking for trouble down the road.
A concrete footer is not strong enough to support the something as narrow and heavy as a retaining wall, or to handle the shear loads created by the weight of the earth behind the wall. Over time, the concrete will crack, and water drainage onto and below the footing will erode it and cause it to sink unevenly. With concrete’s minimal flexibility, any ground shifts will cause breaks in the footer, creating weak spots in your retaining wall.
Stokes uses “open-graded base” construction for our outdoor projects. With an open-graded base, the paving is set on a foundation of varying sizes of compacted stone, which allows for:
- Better drainage, preventing buckling and “heaving” of the stone
- No uneven settling and a foundation that allows for shifting ground
- No washout, resulting in a wall that retains its shape for years to come
Open-graded base operates on the same principles that railroads use to build railway track beds – structures that have, in many cases, lasted for more than a century while supporting loads reaching the thousands of tons.
